Players take on the role of a hero from one of the clans of Armello. Their goal is to quest, scheme, hire agents, explore, vanquish monsters, cast spells, and face off against other players. The ultimate objective is to storm the palace and become King or Queen of Armello. The Kingdom of Armello is filled with dangers such as perils, banes, bandits, and a spreading corruption known as the rot.
The main story in Armello can be completed in approximately 2 hours. If players choose to explore all aspects of the game, including extras, it will take around 18 hours. A completionist playthrough, which involves achieving everything the game has to offer, can take up to 109 hours.

Matches take a long time to complete - sometimes upwards of an hour and, for that reason, are best played against human competitors, where one's cruelty and wisdom takes on sharper significance. That said, the AI in the single-player game is able, and for players worried about entering games via Steam matchmaking, with all the attendant risk of having a human competitor who drifts away from their keyboard half an hour in, the single-player portion provides useful on-going training grounds.
