About
Contra: Operation Galuga is a new entry in the legendary Contra series published by KONAMI and developed by WayForward. Released on March 12, 2024, this title functions as a reimagining of the classic run-'n'-gun action game from the '80s. The game falls under the Shooter, Action, and Platformer genres while offering both single-player and multi-player experiences. Players can engage in co-op combat for up to four players depending on the mode selected. The narrative begins when the Red Falcon terrorist group takes over the Galuga Islands off the coast of New Zealand. Elite Contra commandos Bill Rizer and Lance Bean spring into action to initiate an all-out war where the fate of mankind hangs in the balance. Players run, jump, and shoot their way through eight levels using a devastating arsenal that includes the spread shot, laser, and homing missiles. This updated weapons system now features stackable upgrades and an Overload mechanic. The experience is presented with modern graphics and sound alongside new stages, enemies, bosses, and play mechanics. Story Mode supports co-op combat for up to two players, while Arcade Mode allows for four-player sessions. The main story length is approximately two hours, extending to four hours when extras are included. A completionist run through all content takes about six hours to finish.

Contra: Operation Galuga Critic Reviews and Review Scores

Contra: Operation Galuga is an amusing run-and-gun that met my 2D shooting expectations, but rarely exceeded them.

Though the stages are much longer than their original forms, sometimes clocking in at around 15 minutes, playing through Story Mode only takes a couple of hours. Still, Contra: Operation Galuga packs a whole lot of action into those hours. When you add the more flexible Arcade Mode and difficult Challenge Mode, Operation Galuga is an admirable modernized reimagining of one of the most influential games of the late '80s.

Contra: Operation Galuga reimagines just enough to feel modern without losing the original game's identity.
