About

Halo: Spartan Assault is an action title published by Xbox Game Studios and developed by Vanguard Games alongside 343 Industries. The game arrived on April 4, 2014, and brings Halo combat to Steam for the first time. Players can engage in single-player gameplay that explores the origin of the Spartan Ops program featured in Halo 4. This experience requires DirectX feature level 10 to run properly. The campaign consists of thirty levels set just before the events of Halo 4 where you battle the Covenant. You will command many favorite weapons, vehicles, and armor abilities while customizing your Spartan to create a perfect warrior. The main story takes about four hours to complete, with all extras extending playtime to five hours. A completionist run requires approximately seventeen hours to finish every aspect of the game. Beyond the core campaign, you can earn Steam achievements and compete against friends in leaderboards for top scores. Weekly challenges are available to earn additional XP and further competition opportunities. The interface supports keyboard and mouse controls for this title.

These issues aside, Vanguard's created a decent blaster which offers a couple of moments of genuine bullet-dodging glory: Halo's touch-screen debut is good-looking, colourful, and fun. It's all rather bittersweet, really. If Spartan Assault was terrible, nobody would ever have to know about it, since the combination of release platforms makes it a bit of a curio from the off. In the end, it's actually pretty entertaining stuff. Here's hoping it eventually gets ported around a little.

Spartan Assault features flashes of frantic Halo brilliance, but skip the touch controls. Play with mouse + keyboard!
