About
Mundaun is a horror title developed by Hidden Fields and published by Annapurna Interactive, released on March 15, 2021. This single-player adventure belongs to the indie, action, first person, and adventure genres. The narrative follows a protagonist who travels to Mundaun after learning of his grandfather's mysterious death in a fire. He returns to the valley for the first time since childhood to investigate sinister events haunting the remaining inhabitants. The game is set in a dark, secluded alpine world where reality and myth intertwine. Players can explore varied environments ranging from green meadows across stony fields to snow-covered peaks. The visual style relies on hand-pencilled textures that create a greyscale aesthetic throughout the experience. Hostile creatures roam the landscape, requiring players to survive encounters while navigating steep terrain. A robust inventory system allows players to collect items and uncover story secrets hidden within the world. Driving vehicles such as sleighs and hay loaders is part of the exploration mechanics available in the game. The experience includes solving a variety of hand-crafted puzzles that are integrated directly into the environment. Interactions with eccentric inhabitants occur, some of whom speak an obscure language unique to the setting. The gameplay features a fear resistance factor that acts as a cause and effect mechanic for the player. When fear levels increase, movement speed decreases within the game world. The main story length is approximately seven hours, while completionist playthroughs can take around eight hours. Players will ultimately seek to discover the dark secret behind the grandfather's death.

Mundaun's haunting, pencil-sketch style works wonders, but a few repetitive fetch-quests and slightly underwhelming systems hold it back.

Mundaun has some rough edges, but solid frights wrapped around an intriguing mystery make for a respectable horror experience.
