About
The Sinking City, published by Nacon and developed by Frogwares, is an adventure and investigation game released on February 26, 2021. This title falls within the Horror, Action, Adventure, and RPG genres and offers a single-player experience with controller support. The setting takes place in the 1920s on the East Coast of the United States, specifically within the half-submerged city of Oakmont. Players assume the role of a private investigator tasked with uncovering the truth behind supernatural forces that have possessed the city and corrupted the minds of its inhabitants, including their own. The game features an open world inspired by the universe of H.P. Lovecraft, allowing exploration on foot, by boat, or in a diving suit. An arsenal of weapons from the 1920s is available to confront nightmarish creatures found within this oppressive atmosphere. The main story requires approximately 19 hours to complete, while including extras extends playtime to about 26 hours. A completionist approach to the game takes roughly 32 hours. The investigation system supports high replay value as each case can be solved in multiple ways, leading to different possible endings based on player actions. Managing mental health is also a key mechanic for untangling the truth behind the events.

An occasionally entertaining detective game blighted by poor writing, rote combat, and a dreary open world.
EurogamerMalindy Hetfeld
Frogware's most ambitious title to date sees it take on the Cthulu mythos, but unfortunately it makes for one of its most flawed games too.
IGNJohn Borba

While occasionally frustrating, The Sinking City's compelling stories, exciting environments, and memorable characters make for one of the better Cthulhu lore games around.

The Sinking City succeeds at creating a memorable world and twisting narrative that pulls players beyond its mediocre gameplay

Clumsy design, tedious storytelling, and often game-breaking technical limitations sap The Sinking City of any real terror or intrigue.
