What is Thief?
Thief is a first-person stealth-action game developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Eidos Interactive Corp. It was released on February 27, 2014. The Mac version of the game was developed by Feral Interactive and published by them as well. Players take on the role of Garrett, a thief who operates in a city controlled by the Baron's Watch.
The City is a dangerous place where fear and oppression are widespread. Garrett uses his skills to steal from even the most cautious citizens and their well-protected possessions. As an uprising against the Baron gains momentum, Garrett finds himself caught in the middle of the conflict.
Led by Orion, the people's voice, the citizens are determined to reclaim the City from the Baron's control. The revolution is inevitable, and if Garrett doesn't get involved, the city will descend into violence. This game features a single-player experience. The main story takes approximately 11 hours to complete. If players choose to explore all of the extras, it will take around 23 hours. A completionist playthrough can take up to 45 hours.

At times the game suffers from a lack of ambition, placing far too much importance on the tiresome looting of endless cupboards and dressers in the vain hope that this will be enough to propel you forwards. In other places, Thief suffers from too much ambition, unable to draw its systems into a cohesive whole. Whether the game simply needed more time or entirely different foundations is never quite clear. Either way, it's a game that adds up to less than the sum of its parts.

Though this might seem incongruous with the rest of the review, Thief is definitely a game that's worth playing. It gets a recommendation, despite the final score and its many, many, many flaws, because the stealth gameplay really is great, and with pure stealth games becoming such a rarity it's gratifying to find a game that really brings the art of thieving to life.
