More sad news from the video game world today as it is being reported that Apex Legends developer Respawn has been the latest victim of EA layoffs. As reported by IGN, around two dozen employees have been let go from Respawn as part of EA's ongoing restructuring. In total, the reductions announced by EA will impact around 670 workers across multiple EA studios.
EA says that it is stepping back from future licensed IP products and shifting more to its own IPs to justify this series of layoffs. EA says that it does plan to continue investing in the shooter's future development.
The layoffs have been confirmed by other Apex Legends employees via X (formerly Twitter), including Level Designer Aaron Stump.
After 20 Seasons of Apex and 5 years at Respawn nearly to the day, my job has been made redundant and I have been laid off.

Working on this game and supporting this community has truly been the honor of my career and a highlight of my life.
Thank you for everything, legends ❤️
Along with the Reapawn layoffs, EA has canceled an upcoming Star Wars FPS that was rumored to be centered around a Mandalorian character. The next Jedi game, Black Panther, and Iron Man work is reportedly continuing.
We have, of course, seen pretty sweeping layoffs across the industry this year, and there are likely to be more as 2024 rolls on.
