I think most gamers can agree that sound can have a pretty significant impact on gameplay – particularly in combat. It’s not always about the soundtrack. In fact, if I’m in a game a lot, there’s a good chance I’ll turn off the battle music so I can hear where attacks are coming from.
While I don’t really bother with PvP games, it makes sense that this would be the case for players of games like Apex Legends would view in-game audio the same way. And it looks like Respawn is taking measures to improve audio in their game for just this reason. Today, the developer dropped a rather sizeable post on the free-to-play shooter’s Steam page providing players with a look at specific changes that will be made to the game’s audio in the November 4 update.
The general gist is that the changes will provide players with a new mix option that will allow them to choose how they want to use sound in the game. Players can choose to continue as is or use the new “Focused” mix setting which allows them to reduce the volume of local weapons not belonging to enemies as well as completely remove squadmate footsteps. The setting also increases enemy footsteps.
In addition a “threat system” will dynamically evaluate potential danger and handle sounds appropriately. Another feature will let active sounds lower the volume of other sounds. They’ve also added new telemetry that will allow players to better discern where players are located on the map.
Each of the new adjustments is detailed in the post, with technical information and charts. Because we all love charts. For those interested in such things, you can read the post on Steam. Otherwise, just log in when it’s added and check it out.
