So, as we all know by now, Crystal of Atlan just kicked off its first crossover event featuring characters from One-Punch Man. For some people, this will be very exciting. And I’m excited for them. But, for me, it’s less so.
Here’s the thing: it’s weird to enter one of the hubs and see a dozen Saitamas running around. Yes, I know everyone starts out with their characters effectively looking the same – another annoying trait for MMOs where I see other people all the time – but as you can customize as you go along, I was willing to live with it and play for the story. And, admittedly, I was enjoying the story for the most part.
But with this, I just can’t. It’s too much. The truth is, I tend to ignore a lot of crossovers in story-based games. That’s easy enough to do in games that are more or less single-player. I have never used Aloy in Genshin Impact, despite her being given out for free. I will check out the Fate/stay Night event in Honkai: Star Rail because it sounds like they’ve done a story that will integrate them into the world. But in either case, I’ll only see one single instance of the characters in question in the game, because it’s a solo game.
That said, the idea of crossovers in games like MOBAs doesn’t bother me nearly as much, probably because you’re not really worrying about the story, and it’s possible to see the same character twice in a match. You’re not really embodying a character on their adventure. So, it is what it is.
Still, for this event, I’m out. Maybe I’ll pop back in later when people get bored with it. But chances are pretty good I’ll be sucked into something else by that point. There are a lot of games coming out, after all.
