Last week the Destiny 2 team hit the internet with a livestream focused on tomorrow's Revenant update and a few "Codename: Frontiers" sneak peeks. While we have to wait for more Frontiers info, we are now on the cusp of Revenant's release tomorrow and there's a new trailer showing off some of the update's content.
The shooter's trailer is awesome, actually. There's certainly a gothic feel to things and the music honestly slaps. It's got the whole "Castlevania" type of vibe to it and it makes me want to be a Slayer Baron pretty badly. That's unusual as I have a very casual relationship with Destiny 2 at the best of times. I typically jump in around expansion time, then quickly walk away when I've made my way through the new "main story." If I'm being honest, sometimes I don't even return for some updates at all.
I'll be jumping in tomorrow, though.
Onslaught, one of my favorite game modes that initially debuted back in "Into the Light", is back, but it's received a whole host of updates. There's a new species of Scorn on the loose and it's up to Guardians to hunt them down. This time around, "Onslaught: Salvation" brings 3 maps; Widow’s Court, Eventide Ruins, and Kell’s Grave. All three carry the whole "gothic" vibe rather well. That and the revamped focus isn't about saving others, it's about taking out waves of monsters.
“This time around we were able to identify the design pain points early and got ahead of the enemy teleporting issues,” says designer Clayton Kisko. “We ensured that there were at least three wide lanes for each Advanced Defense Unit (ADU) location. For Eventide Ruins, the larger map, we took our learnings from Mothyards (from the original Onslaught) and set out to make sure enemy spawn locations were closer to the ADU to ensure a closer time-to-complete to the other two maps.”
We also get new countermeasures to play with and some secondary objectives along the way that may requires us to move away from the Advanced Defense Unit we're trying to protect. It's risky business being a Slayer Baron, after all.
There are story beats, here, too. “The main writers for Onslaught: Salvation created some excellent character-building and exchanges between Spider, Crow, Eido, Eramis, and others. Crow is figuring out a new role for himself in the City, Eido is the player’s partner this Episode in a role we can’t wait to share more about, and who knows what Eramis will be up to when she returns, having both helped and fought against us in the past. Fans of the Eliksni and the saga of the Fallen up to this point in Destiny will love what the team has done here,” says Narrative Lead Jonathan To.
That says nothing of the new tonic crafting or the new episode content, so check out the trailer and the reveal stream we covered last week below.
