For a while now, Final Fantasy XIV players have pondered whether we’ll be seeing a mobile version of the MMORPG. After all, almost every game out there seems to be jumping on the mobile bandwagon. We finally have our answer.
Last night, Square Enix announced that a Final Fantasy XIV Mobile version is being developed by Lightspeed Studios under the direction of the Square Enix team. The announcement included a video from Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida, as well as a link to the mobile version’s website where players can sign up for more information.
At present, there isn’t a lot of info on the site. It’s effectively a general rundown of what the game is with some cinematics running in the background. What we do know is that the game will feature all of our favorite characters and have players fighting primals in Eorzea. In fact, the press release states that it “faithfully recreates the original game’s award-winning gameplay and story experience” and that players can look forward to more relaxing content like fishing, Triple Triad, and chocobo racing.
Based on the trailer and the cinematics playing on the site, it seems the mobile version of the game might offer players who missed it a chance to experience the 1.0 storyline leading up to ARR with the mechanics we all know now. That would be a neat way to get current players interested in the mobile version of the game. They’ll need to do something as it appears likely the mobile version will not tie directly into the main game – especially as it’s launching with a limited number of jobs.
Lightspeed Studios is preparing to launch a playtest of the game in China, promising a global launch “soon after”. Players can sign up on the site to stay informed.
