When Overwatch 2’s ninth season launches, it will include several changes intended to address issues players have brought up regarding the shooter game’s matchmaking system, as well as other changes intended to improve the experience in the game. For a while now, players have been noting that while they know their rank, they don’t necessarily know why they have that rank. The game doesn’t really specify what it is that causes a player’s rank to go up or down. The obvious answer is, of course, that players are winning or losing matches, but players are looking for something a bit more detailed than that.
Blizzard announced that with Season 9 they’ll be going back to updating player rank after every match as well as showing how much progress players have gained or lost between Skill Divisions. The new system will also show which Modifiers impacted each player’s last match.
The devs have also decided to re-introduce Placement Matches and reset everyone’s competitive Skill Rank. This will help by giving everyone a fresh start and allowing them to see what they’re really doing. It also just makes good sense as the devs are introducing a new rank: Champion. Now everyone will have the same starting point to work their way to the top.
All of this news comes from a recent post on the Overwatch 2 site. Also included are details on new rewards and weapons that will drop with Season 9. There's also information in the post detailing weapon changes and balancing.
Note: Activision Blizzard has been sued by California’s Civil Rights Department, alleging violations of California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act and Equal Pay Act. CEO Bobby Kotick is alleged to have known about the alleged violations within his company. These allegations have all been denied by Activision Blizzard and the company points to additional diversity and inclusion training as past examples of taking the accusations seriously at the time they were made. This case has been settled for $54 million.
