It's been a while since we covered Legends of Aria. In fact, the last big splash the game made in the genre was when it was taken over by a blockchain company and announced blockchain would be used in the MMORPG. With an all-time Steam Charts peek of 1,150 and a current player base at the time of this writing of 2, it doesn't seem to be going well for them, keep in mind though that the game was delisted from Steam due to the addition of blockchain.
In an attempt to help bring players back, Legends of Aria announced that they are returning to their 2019 ruleset. That'd be how the game was before Steam Early Access. The relaunch is slated to go live on May 9th on Steam.
From the press release:
"Early 2019 was a magical time for Legends of Aria. Players had created some truly amazing player towns and houses, finely crafted with furniture and decorated with the spoils of adventure. We had a balanced flow of red vs. blue (and orange), which played out across our world. We watched large dungeon raids and faction battles explode into meteoric chaos. These are the experiences we wish to return to and faithfully build upon with Legends of Aria Classic."
Legends of Aria will be reintroducing systems such as Karma and Factions while also tweaking and expanding upon them.
The launch of Legends of Aria Classic, as it's being called, will be freely available for everyone to try for 30 days after launch, after which a subscription will be required.
The press release doesn't mention anything about blockchain or NFTs, but CEO Joseph Rubin was pretty adamant that was the game's future in our interview with him. Seeing as the game is returning to Steam though and this is the 2019 build, these later blockchain additions to the game seem doubtful.
The original Legends of Aria, after a failed token launch, rebranded as BRITARIA and tried a second crypto-currency launch. This name change was largely attributed to a new ownership and development group taking over.
