A lot of work goes into creating a continent for an MMO. The devs aren’t just slapping a land mass down in the middle of the map and calling it a day. They have to consider everything from the terrain to the animals and people that live there. That includes deciding what it should look like, feel like, and sound like… and then deciding all those same things for its residents.
Today, Smilegate offered players a look at that process as it was used to create Voldis in Lost Ark. A detailed blog post outlines how they decided Voldis fit into the game’s story, the kind of message the devs wanted to send when creating the area, and how it plays into the themes of divinity within the game. As Voldis is the continent of the sages, the post also details how important their roles are to the region.
The post goes on to discuss the music used to give Voldis its feel, highlighting the soundtrack for the final boss of the Voldis storyline, Lazaram, as well as the city of Kalinar and the Great Sage, Zeherade.
Finally, the post takes a look at one of the Abyssal Dungeons – the Ivory Tower of Chaos – and the Elixir System. For those interested in the thought process that goes into making their games, it’s an interesting read. The full post can be found on the Lost Ark site.
