Riot Games is going away from the current Summoner Name format in League of Legends and other games in favor of the Riot ID, which for most of you should consist of your Summoner Name plus a tag like #0000.
You don't have to do anything to switch to the new system, it will automatically go into effect on November 20th. Players will be allowed one free Riot ID name change every 365 days, or you'll be able to pay $10.00 to change your Riot ID at any time.
Players already have a Riot ID in place, it will just become the default on November 20th. To check your Riot ID go to account.riotgames.com and your Riot ID will be listed at the top. To check your Riot ID through League of Legends, log into the game and hover over your profile picture at the top right. You’ll then see your Riot ID.
There will be a couple of free name changes in the coming months in order to ease the transition over to Riot IDs, so you're not necessarily stuck with what you have now. You can check out the full blog post on the Riot ID changes on the official Riot site.
