League of Legends is changing things up a bit for the 2024 season with updates to the map, items, and Void creatures. On top of all that, Riot is also previewing the newest LoL champion, Hwei.
The map will see some changes in all lanes. Top lane will have more closely mirrored terrain on both sides, with a small wall and brush combination being added to the river entrance. The Jungle will see wide walls added directly across from the Baron and Drake pits. Mid lane brush will be moved back slightly to provide more safety for less mobile champions. Bot land will be getting similar changes to Top with a brush/wall combination at the river entrance.
Mythic items are being removed from the game, with the plan being to transfer the power from items to the champions themselves. New music is also being added when fighting around Baron of other Void objectives.
Riot has also unveiled a first look at Hwei, the newest champion coming to League of Legends. Hwei is a mid-lane mage who paints the artistic visions that fill his head. But instead of painting on canvas, Hwei’s works are dynamic, living images that affect anyone who witnesses them.
“As soon as the possibility of an artistic mage was on the table, everyone gravitated to it,” says narrative writer Isa Mari “orkidian” De Leon. “This is an idea that's been of interest for a long time, but never yet executed, so I feel really lucky for this to be the first new champion I've contributed to.”
In typical Riot fashion, Hwei's kit is bloated with abilities that make him "able to respond to any situation on the battlefield". I remember a time when champions had strengths and weaknesses. Nowadays they can all just do everything.
Here's a look at the complicated kit.
They literally list one Hwei's weaknesses as "limited by having to make a choice between spells". I guess that's the downside to having a kitchen sink ability set.
You can check out the Hwei champion preview and the Hwei ability preview over on the League of Legends site.
