If you're looking for a new entry in the real-time strategy game department, Stormgate starts their early access today. While it'll cost you at least $24.99 to get in now (with more expensive bundles containing other bonus items available), you can also just wait until the F2P title's free access begins on August 13th.
Stormgate features 3 factions, one defending earth and two trying to invade it. At the start of early access, the game will feature a 1v1 mode, a 3-player co-op mode against AI, several of the title's initial campaign missions, and some experimental modes. Once launched, other modes like a 3v3 competitive mode will be added. The RTS will also allow for custom maps and missions in the future when their editor releases.
We initially learned about Stormgate back in 2022 when it was revealed at Summer Game Fest that year. The team at Frost Giant Studios boasted then that they had multiple devs from both Warcraft III and Starcraft II working on the team and that they hoped Stormgate could reinvigorate the genre with new competition and a free-to-play model that didn't interfere with power in the game.
If you're interested in checking out early access but don't want to wait until the 13th, packs are available now on Steam. The initial reviews are coming in as "Mixed" with many of the negative reviews citing a feeling of early access being rushed to try and earn money to complete the game, performance issues, and the game feeling more "alpha" than early access. Also of note is the game's required internet connection even in single-player campaign modes.
