With the impending launch of Sea of Thieves on the PlayStation 5 coming up on April 30th, Xbox Game Studios and Rare have taken the time to give us a fairly substantial FAQ. Let's take a look at the answers they gave, and what it means for PS5 players of seafaring game.
Once players have linked their Microsoft and PlayStation accounts, any pirate they have previously sailed as will become available to play on the PS5. This includes progress and items, except for Microsoft exclusive items that were obtained through platform-exclusive offers. There will be exclusive PS5 cosmetics that players gain through pre-ordering a PlayStation version of the game.
Players will need to buy a PlayStation version of the game in order to play on PS5 even if they have already purchased an Xbox version of the game. PlayStation Plus will be required to play in multiplayer mode, but playing solo in Safer Seas mode does not require a PS Plus subscription.
A Microsoft account will be required to play Sea of Thieves on all platforms, as this is what tracks your progress and allows cross-platform progression.
Sea of Thieves players on PS5 will be able to turn off cross-server play and can even select to play with only players using a controller.
The dev team is currently looking at bringing back six-ship servers again after the launch on PS5.
Live service capabilities have been scaled up in preparation for the arrival of PS5 users and the Sea of Thieves team feels they are ready to welcome those players without causing server issues.
Sea of Thieves supports the PlayStation DualSense controller including the haptics, adaptive triggers, and built-in microphone and speakers.
There are currently no plans to integrate Sea of Thieves with the PSVR2.
Sea of Thieves is optimized to run at 60fps in 4K resolution, and has an additional performance mode for 120Hz refresh rates at 1080p.
All Xbox and Steam achievements will convert to Trophies on PS5.
Closed Beta participants will earn Renown, currency, and cosmetic rewards as part of the Season 11 progression track, and will keep these rewards when the game launches on PS5.
That's the rundown of the FAQ, but if you'd like to read it in its entirety you can do so on the Sea of Thieves site.
