It's been quite some time since we last checked in with Ship of Heroes, the superhero MMORPG being developed by Heroic Games Corporation. Literally, the last time we scoped it out was when they dropped a demo during the Steam Next Fest.
We have a new video to look at today, though, so let's get to it! This time the team talks raids, something very near and dear to my heart, and I have to say I like the team's approach to the activity. Now will it be everything they want it to be? We'll have to wait and see.
According to the team's blog, raids won't just be an endgame affair. They want to spread the fun of larger group content to all levels and players. Actually, "fun" keeps coming up in the post over and over. It's a key focus for the devs.
As an additional perk, you can opt to lead a raid or just join one, depending on how you feel like playing that day. Extra rewards await those that lead successful raids. While the team is shying away from the whole "if one person screws this up you all die" type mechanics, they are actively trying to balance their raid content so every player feels vital to the group.
Raid size is always something an MMO has to consider very carefully. We've seen many MMOs opt for larger raid size requirements, only to not have the player base to support those requirements. Ship of Heroes wants to stay flexible on this front. Currently, their Winter Raid requires at least 30 people, but it can support up to 101 if needed. That "30" requirement could be lowered in the future, if needed, but Ship of Heroes likes the idea of "big" for their raids.
Raids are not required for progression, though. Again, the focus is to make it optional, flexible, and fun, above all else. Check out the post linked above for more screen shots, including shots of the raiding UI.
