When you think MOBA, the first thing to pop into your mind is probably League of Legends or DOTA 2. Well, we're here to shatter your preconceived notions of what a MOBA is, and what they can bring to the table. Here are 6 MOBAs that are shaking up the meta of what you think of when you think of the genre.
Predecessor appears to be the best rebooted version of Paragon that has come along since the latter's demise. Predecessor looks good, runs great, and already has a new game mode out called Brawl. It seems to be holding on to a player base that is enthusiastic about the game and may be set to make right all the wrongs that have come before.
Being a SMITE fanboy, I have to include SMITE 2 on this list. It's making the leap from Unreal 3 to Unreal 5 but is also introducing new aspects and mechanics to the SMITE we currently know and love. Gods in SMITE 2 will be able to choose whether they want to spec for Strength or Intelligence, giving them the option on focusing on their physical attacks or magical ones. AP Neith dropping Weaves all over the map. Yep, that's a thing. ADC Zeus? You best believe it.
Vainglory shakes things up by offering MOBA gameplay across mobile devices. The characters and world are developed with PC quality, but the gameplay and mechanics are perfected for touch screens. If you're looking for a MOBA fix on mobile, then you really should give Vainglory a try. It's quite a bit of fun and a game I do enjoy jumping into from time to time when I'm away from my PC.
What better way to shake up the meta than to cross MOBA gameplay with Hero Shooter gameplay. When you combine the two you get Gigantic: Rampage Edition. A little of this, a little of that, and you get what was one of the biggest surprise comebacks of this generation. The game is top quality, runs well (even though launch was VERY rocky), and most importantly brings the fun. I can't think of a more fitting entry for a list about shaking up the meta than Gigantic: Rampage Edition.
You can watch our First Look video for Warlander below. While I had a few minor complaints about the game, overall it was a pretty fun experience and felt different enough from a standard MOBA to set itself apart. You're pushing lanes still, but there's siege equipment, a handful of classes to play, and enough strategic variety to keep each game interesting. It's been a bit since I've played Warlander, but now that I'm writing about it again, I think I'll redownload it and jump in again.
Project Apidom is billed as an extraction RPG, but with its top-down perspective and very MOBA-esque gameplay, it has gotten the MOBA tag on Steam from players. During a game of Project Apidom, players will fight against both players and monsters while crafting items and earning skill points to customize your Apidom to your playstyle.
And that's our list. What's your favorite MOBA that shakes things up? Let us know down in the comments.
