Trackmania is changing up its business model as the developers say they're giving away too much for free. Now instead of being able to play the entire racing campaign for free, only the first 10 tracks of a campaign will be free along with Royal and Ranked modes, with the other 15 tracks being behind a paywall.
"Be sure we understand that many of you have become accustomed to playing the full campaign for free and we would have preferred to keep it that way," said developer Nadeo in a statement on their site. "This adjustment is being made to ensure that we can keep on providing Starter Access users with various free content. Our primary goal is to keep Trackmania live as long as possible, and have it enjoyed by a maximum player from around the world thanks to the right balance for players who play for free and others who are making it possible for two decades."
Both the current Standard $10 tier and the $25 tier access will be rolled into one new Club Access tier that is $19.99 per year. Oh, and you still have to have a Ubisoft account to play.
This all follows what is, according to Nadeo, a successful reboot of the game following a console release in May.
"While the console release has surpassed our highest expectations in terms of both amount of players and playing time, we need to adapt the quantity of content given for free with the Starter Access, to better match the way the game is played. We also have to be realistic and compare the situation with the efforts made by the studio."
It all goes down on January 9th, 2024.
