Just a week ago, we reported on layoffs impacting the UK studio for Inflexion Games, the makers for the survival MMO Nightingale. We reached out to the team to get confirmation on the number of employees impacted and never heard back. It seems that the team maybe just wasn't ready to confirm information for a process that was still ongoing.
I say "still ongoing" because the team announced on X that they aren't just fully closing the UK studio, they're also restructuring their Canada-based studio, too. Yes, that means more layoffs.
As I'm sure you can guess, the reason is based on the lack of commercial success for Nightingale. While the team isn't totally stopping development on the title, the lack of revenue means the studio cannot continue early access development at their current team size.
"Although we're proud of what we've accomplished with Nightingale to date - as well as the enthusiasm and support from our community - the Early Access release hasn't been commercially successful enough to continue development at our studio's previous size. As a result, we're undergoing a restructuring process in Canada, and we will also be closing our UK office," reads the statement.
As the team works with those impacted by the cuts, they did confirm continued development in replies on X to players asking about Nightingale's future. Inflexion says early access development will continue, and news on updates will come soon.
We certainly hope those impacted land on their feet quickly.
That said, with only about 1000 players on Steam in the last 24 hours, the team is going to have to do something very differently to avoid a future shutdown. Could we see Nightingale try some type of F2P conversion?
I've once again reached out to the Nightingale team to see if we can get information on how many employees were impacted and how big the remaining team is and I'll update this piece if I hear back.
UPDATE: In response to our questions, we were referred to the official statement already referenced in this piece for all the details. While we weren't given exact numbers of employees impacted or employees remaining, it was confirmed to us that the number laid off was in "the dozens".
