We Might Get A New Dungeons & Dragons MMORPG That's Fresh And Modern

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Wizards of the Coast president John Hight has revealed that he would “love” to see a new Dungeons and Dragons MMORPG become a reality. Hight, who joined the company in 2024 after more than a decade at Blizzard leading the Warcraft franchise, says he often thinks about revisiting an MMO set in the D&D universe.

While acknowledgingthe existence of Dungeons and Dragons Online, Hight believes there’s room for a fresh, modern approach. He stresses that any new project would need to rethink the traditional MMORPG model established by Ultima Online, EverQuest, and World of Warcraft. Instead of replicating that formula, Wizards of the Coast would aim to update the concept of an MMO for today’s competitive landscape, which now includes “forever games” like Fortnite and Minecraft.

Hight frames the process as a “crawl, walk, run” situation, explaining that assembling the right talent, technology, and long-term plans would be critical before such a project could take shape. He says he frequently drops hints to his team about the possibilities, and he sees technological advancements as tools to solve problems that were once difficult for earlier MMORPGs.

Ultimately, Hight believes D&D’s greatest strength lies in its adaptability. With its foundation in storytelling and world-building, he believes the franchise can evolve into new forms of online play — and potentially deliver a revolutionary MMO that redefines the genre rather than just iterating on its past.
