AMD is reportedly planning to introduce a new “3D core” to its CPU structure, according to a new leak about the forthcoming AMD Zen 7 architecture. What’s more, we’re apparently not just talking about a massive pool of extra cache here, as seen on recent chips such as the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but a layer of multiple cache slices sitting directly below an enormous number of CPU cores, in a structure that could become a standard part of the architecture.
Given that we’ve yet to see even AMD Zen 6 CPUs, let alone Zen 7, it’s going to be a long time before we see this tech being used in the best gaming CPU designs. The leak says Zen 7 is expected to launch either in late 2027 or early 2028, so it’s at least two and a half years away, but I’m really intrigued about how this new AMD tech could work.
