Hope's Peak Academy houses Japan's most talented high school students. However, Makoto Naegi and his classmates are imprisoned within the school, cut off from the outside world. They are subjected to the whims of Monokuma, a strange, murderous bear who forces them to murder each other for a chance at freedom. Players must uncover Monokuma's true identity and reason for their imprisonment.

The main story takes approximately 25 hours to complete. Adding extras increases the playtime to 31 hours. A completionist playthrough can take up to 45 hours.
