About

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive is a strategy title developed by Spellbound Entertainment AG and published by THQ Nordic GmbH. Released on July 22, 2001, this game blends the narrative style of an adventure with real-time tactical gameplay. Players manage a team of six mercenaries in a western setting to complete various missions. The single-player experience requires combining the distinct skills of each hero to succeed against enemy forces. The story takes place in El Paso during 1881, near the Mexican border in the southwestern United States. Trains for the railroad company Twinnings & Co have been targeted by hold-ups and ambushes for several months. The company management offers a $15,000 reward to capture the leader of the gang responsible for these raids. Bounty hunter John Cooper arrives in town to gather his old partners and declare war on the bandidos. During this pursuit across half of the region, players discover that the mission involves more than it initially appears. Combat involves managing a team of six characters, each possessing very distinct characteristics for real-time management. Players face more than 20 enemies with different profiles ranging from lazy bandits to fearsome mercenaries. Each enemy is ranked on ten criteria including intelligence, courage, marksmanship, and resistance to alcohol. The game features twenty-five different levels set in diverse environments such as villages, ghost towns, fortresses, and boats. These settings include day-time, night-time, storms, and dusk conditions alongside gold mines, saloons, and prisons. The main story takes approximately 24 hours to complete, while the full experience with extras extends to 32 hours. A completionist playthrough requires about 34 hours to finish all available content. The game includes six training levels designed to help players understand the mechanics before entering the main narrative. Cinematic transition scenes connect these levels within a landscape that supports various tactical approaches.
