About

Released on September 28, 1999 by TopWare Interactive and developed by Metropolis Software, Gorky 17 blends horror, RPG, and strategy elements into a single-player experience. The narrative begins in November 2008 when NATO intelligence reports that the Russian military has destroyed Gorky 17, one of the old Soviet Secret Cities for reasons unknown. A year later, NATO takes over a former Russian secret base built on Polish soil where diggers discover a laboratory complex in a completely demolished town. After examining the wreckage, NATO initially decides to leave the lab as it is before hordes of grotesquely deformed creatures suddenly appear on the previously deserted streets. The media soon learns of the events, making it impossible for NATO to simply destroy the site, so troops order the area hermetically sealed with no one allowed in or out. A team of three NATO specialists under the leadership of the Canadian Cole Sullivan is sent inside to examine the horrifying events on the ground. Players face multiple-choice dialog scenes that present constant choices, many of which can have unpredictable effects while they try to discover the terrible secret of Gorky 17. The combination of adventure, RPG, and strategy elements gives the game a uniquely original feel by integrating exploration, character development, and tactical combat. The game features an easy-to-learn, intuitive, multi-faceted user interface alongside a spooky soundtrack that lends each location a special atmosphere. Fully 3-dimensional real-time rendered characters utilize flexible skeleton animation and detailed textures within a life-like environment featuring impressive 3D weather effects. Spectacular 3D effects for weapons include transparencies, particle-based explosions, colored lighting, texture and vertex animations to enhance the visual presentation. The main story length is approximately 10 hours, while the main story plus extras extends to 13 hours. For completionists seeking to see everything, the total playtime reaches 14 hours.
