About
HROT is a single-player retro first-person shooter developed and published by Spytihněv, released on May 15, 2023. The game takes place in a small socialist country neighboring the Soviet Union following an unspecified disaster in 1986. Players begin their journey inside a civil defense shelter located deep beneath a Prague Metro station. In this setting, the atmosphere is dark and terrifying as you assume your duty to protect the homeland from strange intruders. The experience features classic gameplay and vibe reminiscent of romeric shooters from the 1990s, presented with a fitting brown retro aesthetic. You will encounter various weapons including a shotgun, a vz. 13 SMG, a rocket launcher, and secret experimental Soviet battery-powered weapons such as a ball lightning launcher. If ammunition runs low, players can utilize the hammer and sickle as an alternative tool. The game includes handcrafted levels inspired by real locations with an emphasis on historical details and socialist paraphernalia found only in museums or attics within the Eastern Bloc. Specific environmental elements include flushable toilets and destructible light bulbs that contribute to the simulation. The title runs on a custom engine written in Pascal, which imitates 1990s software-style rendering with unfiltered textures and polygon jitter. A demo version of HROT can be downloaded for those wishing to try it before purchase. The main story takes approximately five hours to complete, while including extras extends playtime to seven hours. For a completionist approach, the total length reaches twelve hours.

Hrot's very final boss was a joke that didn't land for me after an unbroken string of ones that did, but otherwise it's pure boomer shooter excellence.
