About
Metal Slug Tactics is a tactical RPG developed by Leikir Studio and published by DotEmu, released on November 4, 2024. The game combines classic arcade action with roguelite tactical thrills in a single-player experience. Players can choose from nine iconic characters to assemble their own squad for combat missions. This title serves as the first tactical RPG entry within the Metal Slug franchise. The campaign takes place against General Donald Morden, who has staged a coup after years of hiding. The Peregrine Falcon Squad must navigate enemy lines and defeat his army before the war escalates. Players face challenges across 110 hand-crafted maps using twenty different mission types. Each battle allows for strategic planning involving weapon loadouts and mods to maximize efficiency. Combat mechanics include a SYNC feature that enables simultaneous attacks to deal massive damage. Reinforcements such as heavy artillery, airstrikes, and the Metal Slug itself are available when the team is in trouble. Experience gained after each encounter unlocks new weapons or bonus perks to upgrade tactical skills. Defeats provide lessons that help players adapt their strategies for future victories. The game features pixel art graphics and a soundtrack by Tee Lopes that complements the action. Players can experiment with 36 loadouts and combos to outsmart enemies and challenge iconic bosses. Upgrading team firepower and skills is central to progressing through the die-and-retry roguelite progression system. This modern tribute allows veterans and new recruits alike to hone their strategic insight.

Metal Slug Tactics Critic Reviews and Review Scores

A smart, stylish adaptation that beats the odds to capture Metal Slug's spirit in another genre, with a few irritating bugs

Metal Slug Tactics lives up to its stone-cold classic namesake from SNK’s golden era with its painstakingly detailed pixel art, head-bopping soundtrack, and snappy structure. It magnificently translates the run-n-gun series into its first turn-based tactics game, but doesn’t sacrifice substance for cheap nostalgia, either.

Metal Slug is a great fit as a turned-based strategy game, but overly luck-dependent roguelike elements and some outdated ideas for how to define enemies slow its march to war.
