About

Blaster Master Zero is an action-adventure title developed and published by INTI CREATES CO., LTD. that launched on Steam on June 14, 2019. The game presents itself as an eight-bit style experience combining top-down and sideview perspectives to evoke the feel of classic NES titles. Players can choose between single-player or co-op modes when facing off against various enemies. The narrative centers on mutant creatures that do not learn from their defeats, setting the stage for a more robust scenario than its predecessor. This title builds upon the original 1988 Sunsoft game by adding new areas, bosses, and extra sub-weapons to the gameplay loop. Exploration mechanics have been refined and expanded to allow for deeper interaction with the game world. In sideview sections, users take control of the battle tank SOPHIA III to investigate surroundings and locate dungeon entrances where bosses reside. Upon finding an entrance, players exit the tank to guide the hero Jason through top-down views inside the dungeons. The main story requires approximately six hours to complete, while including extras extends playtime to eight hours. A completionist run of the game takes about ten hours to finish.

Blaster Master Zero Critic Reviews and Review Scores

While it’s a shame that its dungeon dwelling enemies are far too easily exploited, Blaster Master Zero is ultimately an enjoyable reimagining of a largely overlooked 8-bit classic thanks to the rewarding exploration-focussed structure of its side-scrolling overworld. There are enough secret rooms and power-ups to seek out (including an additional ending), that I was compelled to scour every last inch over the course of my eight-hour completion time. It’s a good reboot; just not a Masterful one.
