About
Crossing Souls is an action-adventure game published by Devolver Digital and developed by Fourattic, released on February 12, 2018. The single-player experience takes place in a California suburb during the summer of 1986, where a supernatural event disrupts the local community. Players control five characters named Chris, Matt, Charlie, Big Joe, and Kevin, each possessing distinct skills and combat styles to fight against various threats. The gameplay involves real-time combat against street gangs, secret armies, dead monsters, and creepy ghosts while solving clever puzzles. A mysterious pink stone enables travel between two realms, placing the group in a situation involving a government conspiracy. Players can switch between characters on the fly to utilize their specialties for overcoming obstacles and targeting enemy weaknesses. The adventure includes special levels inspired by 80s arcade video games and features references to titles like The Goonies and Back to the Future. The game offers an original score that blends tracks inspired by John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith with synth-pop in the style of the decade. Cutscenes are designed to resemble 80s cartoons, presenting a visual style never seen before in a video game. The story spans nine hours for the main plot, extending to ten hours if players complete all extras. A demo version of Crossing Souls is available for those who wish to try the experience first.

An earnest and impactful adventure, written within the margins of an homage to 80s cinema.

Thanks to its robust battle system, intriguing character-switching puzzles, and beautiful storytelling, Crossing Souls is a fantastic adventure that goes beyond its nostalgic trappings

Crossing Souls is a serviceable action-adventure fueled by 1980s nostalgia, but its dependence on classic tropes isn't enough to make it remarkable.
