About
Lamentum is a pixel art survival-horror game developed by Obscure Tales and published by Neon Doctrine, released on May 12, 2022. The title falls within the horror, action, indie, adventure, and survival genres. Players guide Victor Hartwell, a young aristocrat, on a desperate journey to cure the deadly disease afflicting his wife, Alissa. Their only hope lies in the darkened halls of Grau Hill Mansion, where an Earl claims he can heal her using ancient secrets. The game is set in New England during the mid-nineteenth century and features single-player gameplay with controller support. To solve the dark secret at the heart of the mansion, players must navigate a nightmare world full of terrible creatures. Victor will need a lamp to see in the dark, lock picks to open sealed doors and chests, and restoratives to recover health. A myriad of other tools are required to forge a path through this twisting environment. The protagonist can also consult a diary that records his thoughts and annotations throughout the experience. Victor has access to many melee and ranged weapons to defend against dangers that haunt him. Each weapon possesses different strengths and weaknesses, making careful selection essential for survival. Firearms offer a range advantage but consume scarce ammunition found within Grau Hill Mansion. The inventory system is limited, requiring players to choose which objects to carry at any given moment. In certain locations, an item box allows storage of objects for later use. The game features shortcuts in the inventory to quickly switch between melee weapons, ranged weapons, and potions. This capability makes combat more agile and effective during encounters. The world is filled with nightmare creatures that exhibit different behaviors and attack patterns. Beyond creatures, the mansion contains traps that may reward ingenuity or punish mistakes with death. Dangerous puzzles and lethal environments also pose significant threats to the player. During the journey, players will meet other characters and strange beings whose trustworthiness must be evaluated carefully. Every decision made can have important consequences for the outcome of the story. The game offers different endings based on Victor's choices throughout the experience. Players are encouraged to replay the title to obtain the best possible end. The main story lasts approximately five hours, while including extras extends playtime to six hours. Completing all aspects of the game requires about eight hours.
