The narrative explores themes of class struggle, poverty, and the public's fear of emerging steam technology across four distinct boroughs. Players investigate crime scenes and interrogate suspects while gathering clues into a casebook for review. The story follows police detective turned private investigator Miles Fordham as he navigates the shadowy corners of the city. His former partner constantly speaks to him from beyond the grave, causing his grip on sanity to loosen over time. The game offers multiple character paths and different outcomes based on player choices, allowing the story to adapt accordingly. You can follow the law or make your own rules, knowing that your actions will affect how people treat you. Five cases are available to solve, each featuring multiple suspects, false leads, and various possible endings. If a case becomes unsolvable, players can simply move on to the next one without getting stuck in a dead-end situation. The interface uses single clicks with no inventory system, handling item manipulation through a context-sensitive cursor. Over 50 professionally voiced characters appear throughout the experience, accompanied by an original score by Mark Benis. The main story takes approximately 10 hours to complete, while including extras extends playtime to around 13 hours. A completionist run requires about 15 hours of gameplay.
