Pathway is a strategy RPG developed by Robotality and published by Chucklefish, released on June 11, 2020. The game places players in the 1930s great desert wilderness where they must navigate global turmoil and Nazi influence spreading across Europe and the Middle East. You will assemble a team of bold adventurers to journey through the desert and explore bunkers and temples of Northern Africa. These locations hold hidden treasures and secrets that must be discovered before they fall into the hands of Nazi forces. The title features turn-based squad skirmishes set in an early 20th century pulp-adventure setting where players can quickly run for cover or flank enemies. Each mission involves trekking through a randomized map while encountering brief choose-your-own-adventure stories that flesh out the story context. Success depends on managing risks taken during these encounters, though missions can be repeated at any time to face new series of events. The game includes five different campaigns of varying difficulty, with each attempt generating a new web of encounters and unique storyline. Players can choose from over 400 hand-crafted story events where they must make tough choices regarding what to search for or save in every explored location. Combat relies on using cover and positioning within exciting turn-based squad skirmishes while utilizing equipment and team abilities effectively. The roster includes sixteen unlockable characters, each possessing their own skills, weaknesses, and quirks ranging from melee strength to rifle expertise. Loot systems have been reworked to reward players with common weaponry, rare items, and unique objects that possess special abilities. Visuals are presented through classic 16-bit pixel art enhanced with depth, lighting, and shadows using Pixel/Voxel Hybrid Technology. The soundtrack is composed by Gavin Harrison, who is known for his work on Halfway. An update called Adventurers Wanted was released to introduce exciting changes and all new content to the game. This update adds eighteen new unlockable character abilities that bring a range of new tactical options to the combat system. It also includes tweaks to the AI and general balancing alongside a reworked loot and item system designed to be more satisfying. New combat arenas add variety to scenarios, including farms, airfields, Nubian pyramids, and other locations for players to explore. Numerous adventure-specific events have been added to better flesh out the story context while existing events were reworked to present more interesting choices. The game is now playable in Chinese and Japanese in addition to its original language support. Players can expect a main story length of eleven hours, with seventeen hours if including extras, or twenty-seven hours for a completionist run.
