About
Terra Nil is an environmental strategy title developed by Free Lives and published by Devolver Digital, released on March 28, 2023. This single-player experience falls within the indie, puzzle, strategy, city builder, and casual genres. The core objective involves transforming a barren wasteland into a thriving, balanced ecosystem through careful planning. Players begin by purifying soil to create fertile grassland and clean polluted oceans to form beaches and wetlands. Advanced eco-technology allows users to plant forests and wildflowers while reintroducing wildlife to the newly formed habitats. After establishing these environments, the goal is to recycle all constructed buildings so that no trace of human presence remains. The game features procedurally generated landscapes, ensuring that every map presents randomized terrain for each playthrough. This procedural generation means that no two sessions will ever be identical, requiring players to adapt their strategies to unpredictable conditions. The main story takes approximately five hours to complete, while the full experience including extras can extend to eight hours. A completionist run dedicated to exploring all aspects of the game requires about ten hours of playtime.

The reverse city builder is trickier than it appears, but utterly committed to its environmental vision, taking the genre - and every level - to new places.

A small but satisfying strategy puzzler that comes, does its job and leaves without fuss.

What is on offer at release is worthwhile, both in gameplay and message. In focusing on environmental expansion instead of human expansion, Terra Nil delivers something wholly unique. While the peaceful nature and serene tone are sometimes interrupted by uneven mechanics, Terra Nil is a worthwhile experience for those looking for a new twist on the sim genre.
