About

Paradigm is an indie adventure game developed and published by Jacob Janerka that blends comedy, puzzle-solving, and sci-fi elements. Released on April 4, 2017, the single-player experience takes place in the strange and post-apocalyptic Eastern European country of Krusz. The setting features surreal 2D graphics that mix styles reminiscent of Pixar with Fallout aesthetics. Players will explore a world where dial-up internet is back in fashion and floppy disks can save the world. The environment reflects 70s and 80s influences, including large supercomputers and space-age furniture. You play as Paradigm, a handsome mutant whose life began at DUPA genetics. This company sells prodigy children to wealthy families who do not want to leave their inheritance to biological offspring. A mistake during his growth process left the character mutated, so DUPA dumped him in an abandoned post-Neo-Soviet town. Despite these unfortunate beginnings, Paradigm finds solace in music and dreams of becoming a top electronic music artist. His journey is complicated when his past returns in the form of a genetically engineered sloth that vomits candy. The game offers a classic point-and-click adventure format similar to titles like Monkey Island or Space Quest. Along the way, you meet various strange characters including a psychopathic superhero and a secretary knight. Other notable figures include an evil sloth antagonist and a glam metal cult leader pug. The narrative involves mature content and dark humor, such as helping a local drug addict or going on a date with a toaster. You must reluctantly step up as the world's saviour while trying to finish your latest EP. The main story takes approximately six hours to complete, while playing through all extras extends the experience to eight hours. A completionist run of the game also requires about eight hours to finish. This length allows players to explore the full scope of the surreal adventure without unnecessary speculation on replayability. The title and genre terms are used naturally throughout the description to fit the context of the platform.

Funny and fresh from beginning to end, Paradigm is a traditional point-and-click adventure game full of heart and decapitated heads in jars. The Eastern European setting, great voice acting, and confident comedy shine throughout its roughly six hours. Relatively simple puzzles aside, Paradigm offers a fresh and memorable entry in a genre that I'm happy to see alive and well in 2017.
