About
Blackguards 2 is an indie fantasy RPG developed and published by Daedalic Entertainment that arrived on January 20, 2015. This adventure combines turn-based strategy elements with a gritty narrative centered on violence and crime within the world of Aventuria. Players engage in challenging hexfield battles while managing a squad of up to twenty characters who fight for death or glory. The game offers single-player gameplay where every decision influences the outcome of the story and the fate of your allies. The plot takes place three years after the events involving Count Uria, finding Cassia incarcerated in a dungeon with her primary goal of claiming the Shark Throne. She intends to escape her prison confinement and overthrow the current ruler, Marwan, by recruiting an army of sellswords and rallying the Vanquishers of the Nine Hordes. Her path forward requires navigating political obstacles without relying on diplomacy or politics, instead choosing a more practical approach to seize power. The journey involves finding upgrades for your mercenaries and uncovering what has become of former companions like Takate, Naurim, and Zurbaran. Cassia must master multiple non-linear paths that allow her to choose spells, talents, and skills that dictate strategy on the battlefield. You can prioritize offensive capabilities or tactical advantages during challenging encounters while interacting with your environment to collapse walls or discover new routes. The experience includes more than twenty hours of playtime, offering eighteen hours for the main story and up to twenty-three hours if you pursue completionist goals. Each action carries consequences that shape the ending of the game as you lead your party through various scenarios.

Blackguards 2 Critic Reviews and Review Scores

One of the delights of settling down to a turn-based tactical RPG is poking around to understand how its systems combine and then utilising those systems in imaginative and tactically satisfying ways. In this regard, Blackguards 2 delivers. Eventually. The writing and presentation are serviceable rather than spectacular but there's a decent level of scope for customisation and engaging combat if you can push past its trudging opening hours. Cassia and co's deep-seated issues and baggage make them an entertaining bunch and while they won't set your world alight, they eventually prove capable of providing many hours of surprisingly amiable companionship.

Blackguards 2 removes much of the chaff from the original game, but you'll still need some patience.

Sinister protagonists and smart tactical combat make Blackguards 2 a compelling exercise in evil.
