About
Kholat is a single-player horror adventure game developed and published by IMGN.PRO. Released on June 8, 2015, the title falls within the indie, first person, and adventure genres. The game features narration by Sean Bean and centers on an exploration of the inhospitable Ural Mountains. Players investigate the mysterious death of nine Russian hikers known as the Dyatlov Pass incident. The narrative draws from a true event that occurred in the winter of 1959 when skilled alpinists died during a trip to the northern part of the Ural Mountains. Their bodies were found scattered on the slope of Kholat Syakhl, leading investigators to conclude that an unknown force caused the fatalities. The game presents a self-made story inspired by these true events with a main storyline and background plot for players to discover. Navigation within the non-linear open world is handled using a map and compass. The experience includes challenging exploration across the winter scenery of the mountains. Audio elements consist of sophisticated music and sounds that contribute to the chilling atmosphere and tension. The title runs on Unreal Engine 4 and features art design intended to support the visual presentation. Estimated playtime for the main story is four hours, while adding extras extends the duration to five hours. A completionist run can take up to seven hours depending on how much of the background plot is uncovered.

As a lifelong fan of Fortean mystery and atmospheric adventures, Kholat is a game I really wanted to love, but it left me out in the cold in more ways than one.

Kholat's poor attempts to creep and confound you fail to capitalize on its terrific premise.
