About
This game is a return to first-person narrative horror for The Chinese Room, the studio behind critically acclaimed games such as Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Dear Esther. It takes place in 1975 when disaster strikes the Beira D oil rig off the coast of Scotland. Players take on the role of an offshore oil rig worker who must fight for survival during a vicious storm, perilous surroundings, and the dark, freezing North Sea waters. All lines of communication have been severed and all exits are gone. The only option left is to face the unknowable horror that has come aboard. The game features a detailed offshore oil rig in 1970’s Scotland that changes throughout the story. It also boasts high-quality visuals, writing, and sound design from award-winning studio The Chinese Room. STILL WAKES THE DEEP was published by Secret Mode and developed by The Chinese Room. It is scheduled for release on June 18, 2024. The game features a single-player experience.

Still Wakes the Deep is a relatively short game (I completed the campaign in under five hours). The story is strictly linear, akin to some of The Chinese Room’s other games, with no collectibles or secrets. While it’s true that the game builds on the setting, atmosphere, tension, and body horror, it flubs the most crucial aspect: the moments when you actually face the creatures. It’s like if The Thing was “from another world,” but it’s revealed to be E.T. due to how harmless it is. In the end, this romp through an infested oil rig might look slick, but it spills over and slips when it matters most.
