Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is an action and simulation title developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The game was released on January 18, 2003, and features single-player gameplay. Players assume the role of Sam Fisher, an operative for the Third Echelon, a sub agency of the National Security Agency. This organization possesses support from major U.S. intelligence agencies but remains unrecognized by the government. If any cell is compromised, the government will disavow knowledge of its existence and remaining members will vanish. The narrative begins with Sam Fisher receiving an important first mission after two CIA agents disappear in T'Bilisi, Georgia. These agents were investigating communications blackouts in the area before their disappearance. Fisher infiltrates the Georgian government to uncover more than a couple of corpses during his investigation. He reveals a threat that will have devastating consequences for the region. The core gameplay involves infiltrating terrorist positions and acquiring critical intelligence by any means necessary. Players must execute missions with extreme prejudice while ensuring they exit without a trace.
