About
Harold Halibut is an indie adventure and simulation title developed and published by Slow Bros., released on April 16, 2024. The game presents a single-player experience set aboard FEDORA I, a city-sized spaceship submerged in an alien ocean. This ark-like vessel has been traveling for 250 years since it fled Earth during the onset of a cold war to preserve the human race. Most inhabitants have accepted life on the ship, but lead scientist Jeanne Mareaux continues searching for a new, dryer home. Players take on the role of Harold, a young lab assistant who manages daily tasks alongside his busy schedule with the ship's diverse crew. A fateful encounter eventually introduces Harold to an unexpected world that may provide the solution needed for Mareaux's re-launch plans. The narrative explores themes of friendship and life while guiding players through a retro-future setting in search of the true meaning of home. The game features unique stop-motion aesthetics where every element is hand-crafted using traditional sculpting and model-making techniques. All inhabitants of FEDORA I are presented with full English voiceover to elevate the story to cinematic proportions. An expansive character ensemble allows players to meet various individuals and learn their personalities through meaningful conversations. The storyline combines drama, humor, and suspense within a carefully orchestrated script.Read moreShow less

A visually arresting, warm-hearted tale of a gofer searching for his purpose, Harold Halibut flounders amongst endless fetch-quests and waffle.

A great artstyle and flashes of brilliance never truly make up for a meandering, risk-averse plot.

It may take place at the bottom of the ocean on a distant alien planet, but Harold Halibut’s story is an entirely human one, both in terms of its carefully handmade environments and its strong emphasis on empathy towards its eccentric cast of characters. While I wish that there was a little more interactivity to be found throughout its subaquatic setting, and Harold’s shuffling run could have been boosted to a sprint to reduce the time spent repeatedly schlepping from one end of its levels to the other, I nonetheless remained captivated by his whimsical quest to unite his community and explore the spectacular surroundings of his sunken home. Consistently funny and full of surprises, Harold Halibut is a wholesome, handcrafted adventure with plenty of heart.

Harold Halibut is a triumph in its characters and visuals but struggles to stay afloat under its own scope and ambitions.
