About
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is an action indie adventure RPG platformer developed and published by Wayforward Technologies. The game was released on April 22, 2015, and offers a single-player experience for players to explore. This title serves as the third installment in the series and represents the largest entry in the franchise to date. The narrative follows Shantae, a genie known for her hair-whipping abilities and belly dancing skills, after she loses her magic. She must team up with Risky Boots, a pirate who is technically her nemesis, to save Sequin Land from an evil curse. As the story progresses, Shantae adopts a pirate persona which grants her access to new weapons needed to advance her quest. Players will encounter cursed islands and labyrinths while searching for pieces of Pirate Gear such as a Flintlock Pistol, Pirate Hat, Scimitar, Risky's Boots, and a Cannon. The gameplay involves slaying monsters, battling epic bosses, and upgrading Shantae's hair and weapons or unlocking advanced Fighter's Moves. You can also locate maps, return lost Heart Squids, and collect rare loot throughout the journey. The main story takes approximately eight hours to complete, while including extras extends the playtime to ten hours. A completionist run of the game also requires about ten hours of gameplay to finish all objectives. The adventure includes moments where players can laugh at the weird and wild elements found within Sequin Land.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse succeeds by building a funny, gorgeous world around its tried and true Metroidvania gameplay. In the brief moments when the combat becomes exhausting, it’s the writing, in all its self-referential and juvenile glory, and its visual splendor that keep the pace going. Though it’s an unmistakable tribute to Metroid and Castlevania, infusing a sharp wit and bold style helps Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse stand above its retro-inspired contemporaries.

A solid retro-minded throwback that packs some funny dialogue but ultimately fails in its backtracking-heavy quest structure
