About
Through the Darkest of Times is a historical strategy and simulation game developed by Paintbucket Games and published by HandyGames. Released on January 29, 2020, this indie adventure places players in Berlin during 1933 as the leader of a small resistance group. The single-player experience focuses on ordinary people from diverse backgrounds, including Jews, Catholics, Communists, and Patriots who oppose the regime. Survival involves managing significant risks such as being caught by patrolling National Socialists or facing violence from the German military. Players can choose to drop leaflets to spread awareness, paint messages on walls, sabotage operations, gather information, or recruit more followers. These actions represent small blows against the monstrosity of the German Reich while trying to avoid losing everything and loved ones. The main story takes approximately seven hours to complete, with additional content extending the playtime to ten hours. For those aiming to finish all objectives, the completionist length reaches fifteen hours. The narrative explores how fear and risks defined daily life during these dark times.

Through the Darkest of Times paints what feels like an accurate portrait of life in Nazi Germany. Cherry-picking major events, like the Reichstag Fire or the opening ceremony of the Olympics, it convincingly places you at the scene, putting you in the shoes of a regular German trying to come to grips with how one person--or even five people--can respond in the presence of evil.
