Today's Marvel Rivals patch isn't the biggest of patches, but it did promise to bring the initial version of one of the F2P shooter's most highly anticipated items. Buying premium cosmetics for your favorite superheroes is good, but being able to customize the color of their costumes is even better.
While we knew this initial "launch" of the feature would be limited, the team at NetEase did say they will be adding more options over time. These options would include more heroes and more color options. When you do customize these colors, it'll impact how the heroes appear in emotes, MVP animations, and introduction animations.
However, there's a catch...because of course there is, right?
Right now, the cost to customize a skin you already paid for will cost you more cash. The feature utilizes a new currency called "Unstable Molecules." It'll cost you 600 of these to unlock customization options for your skin. The way you get the new currency? Aye, there's the rub. Right now you can only obtain Unstable Molecules by exchanging Lattice (the game's premium currency) at a 1:1 ratio. That means that 600 Unstable Molecules will cost you around $6 USD. Again, that's after you've already paid for the premium skin itself.
While NetEase has advised via X (formerly Twitter) that Season 3 will offer "more options" to obtain the molecules, that's where we're at right now and players aren't exactly thrilled at the new expense.
The patch also adds some new items to the store and some bug fixes and balance updates, but yeah...I have a feeling the cost of color customization is going to be the main thing players talk about today. Honestly, it's probably the first really poor decision I've seen from Marvel Rivals and I think they need to open up the "options" sooner rather than later to avoid a totally fair bit of backlash.
