I don't really write about CCP Games all that often. Q is more in tune with the world of EVE Online than I am, so she usually gets those pieces assigned to her. However, this will be the third time I've mentioned CCP this week, having just written a feature on the MMORPG I wish was never cancelled. Yes, it was a CCP Games project.
What isn't likely to be cancelled at this point is EVE Frontier, the new, F2P, blockchain-related MMO coming from the company. In fact, if you haven't been in any testing so far, the team is inviting anyone who wants access to check that game out for 10 days for free starting tomorrow, April 11th. You need to be a "Remnant" on their site before you can access the trial, but that part's pretty easy. The official site gives you step-by-step instructions to gain access.
However you feel about blockchain and cryptocurrency aside, EVE Frontier is trying something I think is very ambitious and I will be watching it closely. CCP Games already knows how to do sandbox games, obviously. However, EVE Frontier is a bit of a different beast when the sandbox becomes open-source and allows third-party development. Players are free to make their own bases, a stargate network, and even create their own factions and currencies to foster their own damn economy.
In theory, it all sounds very cool, but execution and making the game fun will be key. Convincing gamers, and not just crypto speculators, to jump in will also be a key hurdle CCP will have to overcome.
The free trial also sees the beginning of "Cycle 3" in EVE Frontier. That means all existing bases, claims, and everything else is being reset. You won't be starting at a disadvantage, it's a clean slate for all players.
The test kicks off tomorrow and runs until April 21st. If you want to see more of the game's development plans, CCP Games will be streaming tomorrow (April 11th) at 1 PM EST. Hit up their Twitch channel to tune in.
