MMOBOMB
Aug 10, 2024
Some Sea of Thieves players probably aren’t very happy right now – about 20,000 of them. Yesterday, Rare announced that over 20k players would be having their progress rolled back after they took advantage of an unintended exploit that rolled out with Season 13.
The exploit made it possible for crews to get more than the intended amount of rewards when completing the rituals at the Ancient Temples. It only took about three days following rollout for the dev team to patch the exploit, but in that time players took advantage of it, adding around 300B gold to the MMORPG’s economy.
In a video posted yesterday, Production Director Drew Stevens acknowledged that the team failed to prevent the exploit but noted that “players that abuse [exploits] to gain an advantage should expect to be penalized”. He also stated that these penalties can range from removal of progress to suspended playtime. It’s not a surprising stance and one they will end up reiterating the next time.
The video also details a few adjustments coming to Season 13 for those that want to dive into the nitty gritty.
