A couple of weeks ago, XL Games and Kakao Games revealed that the anticipated ArcheAge sequel was going to become something a little different. While it’s still a multiplayer game in the ArcheAge franchise, the shift left no room for a standard MMORPG named ArcheAge 2. Instead, the developers are calling it an “online action RPG” and have renamed it ArcheAge Chronicles.
That said, the game will still have a lot of the features players associate with MMOs, such as a persistent world, a player-based economy, and various social features. Then the question is, what exactly makes this game different from any other MMO much less one that the team called the "next evolution of the MMORPG genre?"
Today, Executive Producer Yongjin Ham answers questions players may have about that in a behind-the-scenes video. The video shows some of the development process and explains how the shift to ArcheAge Chronicles happened.
During development, the team looked to “infuse the game with elements suitable for a new era” in the hope to “[push] the boundaries of what players expect from an online game”. It seems a lot of the focus is on creating a world that players really want to live in while offering them combat that comes as close to what players would expect from a single-player game as possible.
As with the reveal trailer, the game looks nice. Of course, it will be interesting to see where it goes. One thing that is very nice about the whole thing is that they are developing for PC and consoles at the same time. It only makes sense as they stated in the video that they hope to introduce more people to the MMORPG genre.
The team also says they posted something on Steam talking about blending action-combat and immersive world-building. I'd like to read it as it says they talk about "untold stories" of the world, but the post isn't quite up yet despite being linked on their X account. Here's a link to the tweet in case they do get it working.
