I love puzzle games. When Lunarch and Behaviour Interactive announced Islands of Insight, I was very interested. A puzzle game in an MMO package where you can solve puzzles with friends and join on adventures? Cool, let's see what they have in store!
If you watched my First Look video on the title (I have put it below if you haven't) then you know that I really enjoy the game. I still play it to this day. My biggest gripe with the game was the actual "MMO" implementation.
It wasn't really meaningful. Sure, you could group up with friends...but there wasn't really a point. You can't chat in the game, solving puzzles together doesn't solve them for everyone in the group, honestly it just felt like a way to MAKE the game be online all the time.
It was also a concern on the longevity front. Being online all the time as an "MMO" meant that if the game ever closed then you'd never be able to play it again.
Finally, the team has announced that an offline mode is coming. "We’re happy to announce that Lunarch is currently developing an offline mode that will be released in the coming months. While this isn’t the easiest task, we’re excited to see where the journey will take us. In the meantime, follow our Steam blog posts and social channels for further updates," reads the announcement.
No date yet, but this is 100% the right decision.
