In-game trading is coming to an end in Rocket League. A post published yesterday on the sport game’s site announced that player-to-player trading will be removed from the game on December 5.
According to the post, Psyonix is doing this to bring the game in line with “Epic’s overall approach to game cosmetics and item shop policies”. This means items no longer being transferrable between players in any way. No trading or selling. The plans are to make Rocket League vehicles available in other Epic games down the line, as part of “cross-game ownership”.
The post includes a brief FAQ. Players who have duplicate or unwanted items will need to make use of the Trade-In system, rather than giving them to other players. If a player has lent an item to another player, they’re kinda screwed. Psyonix says they don’t support lending of items and they’re considered trades and therefore final.
If you’re wondering about third-party websites, that’s out too, but that’s pretty much a given with any online game. If you buy from other sites, you always buy at your own risk. Finally, any trades done before December 5 will be honored. Players don’t have to worry about losing those items.
As you might expect, players aren’t exactly happy about the changes. Comments on Reddit point out that the move is likely intended to kill the second-hand credit market and drive prices up. Of course, there are the standard “RIP” comments, calls for boycotts of the items shop, and similar statements of discontent. Whether or not any of it will cause Epic and Psyonix to rethink their decision remains to be seen.
