The Secret World’s anniversary is coming up again. It’s been fourteen years since the free-to-play conspiracy-laden paranormal MMORPG launched in 2012. I have to admit, even as a fan of the game, it’s not something I’ve personally kept track of. Once everyone involved with creating the game left, and Funcom just gave up on it after dropping the update with South Africa in it, I moved on. I didn’t want to. It was my dream game after all. But I’d played the story that existed, and there were other stories to experience.
That said, there are still people happily playing the game and finding ways to create their own fun. For a while now, the players have been putting together their own holiday events. And this year’s anniversary is no different, it seems. As reported on MassivelyOP (who are tracking the activities of The Secret World community more closely than I am these days), the players have put together their own story-based event for July 3.
The event is focused on the Kingsmouth Lighthouse. According to a post in the (RP) journal of “conspiracy bloodhound, ghost-chaser, and proud member of the tin-foil elite,” Jenna McKendrick, something is being broadcast from the Kingsmouth Lighthouse. It’s definitely not something natural and features signatures that match Orochi Group comms equipment. For those not familiar with The Secret World, that’s one of the game’s organizations. I won’t say “bad guys” or “good guys”. That’s pretty relative in a world where everything’s a conspiracy.
The gist of the post is that something will be happening at the Lighthouse on July 3 at 18:00 UTC when the full transmission goes live, and that Jenna will need help gathering all the audio fragments and putting them together. The event will be streamed live on Twitch as players work together to solve the puzzle. It’s pretty neat, and it makes me happy to know that players are keeping the spirit of the game alive.
Full details on the community anniversary event can be found on the Feed the Moths blog, which is worth a read on its own anyway.
